Jesca Hoop: The House That Jack Built Review

Cali singer-songwriter, Jesca Hoop returns with her third album of wonderfully twisted indie pop gems. Hoop's achy, frayed vocals and her experimental approach to pop music works wonders straight away on "Born To", wailing restlessly through a cacophony of sparkling acoustic guitar and stuttering drums. The strained hook reaching through the delightfully plucky acoustic guitar makes for a dazzling listen. The eerie flicker balanced against her fractured voice on "Peacemaker" and the disconnected layered vocals and reverb-dipped guitar toiling through "Dig This Record" show off Hoop's ability to craft tunes that will take you a dozen listens to peel back the layers on, but the stomping kick drum and music box guitar winding around the feel-good bop of "Hospital (Win Your Love)" finds her equally compelling when a bit more accessible. From the icy cool of the title-track ballad, as she reveals a crisper vocal shooting through a sparse arrangement of drippy guitar, to the chugging, playful groove of "Ode To Banksy", Hoop remains one of the most intriguing talents in indie pop.
