Zulu Winter: Language Review

The debut album from London's Zulu Winter pits their obvious affinity for new wave against their love of shaggy indie rock. The result is a well-balanced, gorgeous listen that buoys cascading guitar on fluttering waves of synth carrying you to the quintet's tenderly melodic hooks. The blippy synth flare-ups and plucky bass line of "Bitter Moon" show off the band's ability to tread a fine line between effervescent cool and danceable indie pop. Will Daunt's easy going vocals fit well within the captivating feel-good vibe of tracks like bubbly "Silver Tongue" and shimmering "We Should Be Swimming". The achy falsetto wafting through a nimble bass groove and chirping guitars on "Let's Move Back To Front" and the thumping drums and airy vocals of "Key To My Heart" offer infectious tunes that manage to be as wistful and carefree as they are danceable. Zulu Winter may not be reinventing the wheel, but those taking them out for a spin will find it an enjoyable ride nonetheless.
