Southern California indie rock sextet, Races offer a delightfully groggy, dreamlike sound on their debut album. Fusing languid, reverberating guitar and marshmallow creme vocals with their feel-good hooks, Races proves to be a comforting listen. The raspy husk in, front man, Wade Ryff's unique vocals are impossible to ignore, pulling you headlong into the steady drums and sweetly cooing background harmonies of "Song Of Birds" and the quivering riffs and waltzing beat of "The Knife". If there is an issue with the album, it is that Races occasionally get a bit too relaxed and coast through sleepy organ-humming tracks like "Living Cruel & Rude", but the psychedelic swirl of "In My Name" shows the lethargic vibe suits them well when they remember to spice it up with a touch of snarling guitar. Still, things come together more often than not, with the grumbling bass line and breathy breeze of Ryff's vocals adding up to magic on "Big Broom" and the sparkling guitar and cheery harmonies pulling together for the fantastic "Lies".
