Chicago quintet, Gold Motel return with another batch of their retro flavored rock on their self-titled sophomore album. The easy-going, jazzy charm of Greta Morgan is reminiscent of Dusty Springfield, working well with the sun-drenched blend of romantic sixties pop and the loosely flung riffs of mid-eighties guitar pop. Lean riffs jab over sawing guitar on opening "Brand New Kind Of Blue" as Morgan pulls you in into the album quickly with her warm vocals. The jittery guitar sparkling on energizing "Cold Shoulders" and the chirping pulse of guitar stomping through "In Broad Daylight" find the album offering plenty of danceable rock.
The album's mellower moments, like the fifties leaning balladry of "These Sore Eyes" and the lush bass line and organ pairing of "Slow Emergency", succeed on the strength of Morgan's velvety voice weaving an inescapable web. The glistening riffs and shimmying beat of "Your Own Ghost" balances the upbeat groove of the music against a cool, captivating vocal, while the more staccato thrust of "At Least We Tried" offers a more caffeinated Morgan as she happily shakes off a relationship. The carefree melodic hook of "Always One Step Ahead" is one of the best on an album full of great ones. Gold Motel's sophomore album is a delightful retro rock offering sure to find its way into heavy rotation through your summer.
