Now Here This - Week of June 25, 2012

As you ramp towards fireworks, drinks, and barbecues, the city offers a wealth of great live music to pick from this week.

Tuesday, June 26
Glen Hansard @ The Vic
SOLD OUT 7pm
Opening: Lisa Hannigan

Glen Hansard's solo debut, released last week, was not quite what we were expecting, but he is still Glen Freaking Hansard. Add the fantastic Lisa Hannigan to the bill, and it is easy to see how this sold out in a hurry.

Young Man @ Lincoln Hall
$10 8pm
Opening: Catacombz, Mines

Singer songwriter, Colin Caulfield is in the middle of his planned Young Man trilogy; releasing the excellent second piece, Volume 1, earlier this year. Given his on-the-verge status, we are a little shocked there are still tickets available to this one. Make sure you take advantage while they last!

Chappo @ Subterranean
$10 8pm
Opening: Canadian Pavers, Nick Shaheen

When Young Man's show at Lincoln Hall inevitably sells out, fret not. The explosive psychadelic new wave leaning stylings of this New York band will do just fine. Seems their killer new single "Come Home" is on at some point on the drive home on Siruis' Alt Nation, and we still cannot seem to get enough of it.

Wednesday, June 27
River City Extension @ Schubas
$10 8pm
Opening: The Drowning Men, Deserters

This eight-member New Jersey folk rock outfit is a must-see. Their brand of cathartic, explosive acoustic rock leaves us wondering how more folks have not caught on yet. The fantastic narrative songwriting, wonderful melodies, and towering power of the band make this our pick for show of the week.

Parlovr @ Empty Bottle
$8 9:30pm
Opening: Hooded Fang, Goose Hut

Canada can have all the hockey and maple syrup they want, we just want them to keep importing indie pop the likes of, Montreal trio, Parlovr. Their Kook Soul took us happily by surprise earlier this year with their blend of loosely strung jangly goodness and tight pop hooks.

Thursday, June 28
Cameron McGill @ The Hideout
$10 9pm
Opening: Rachele Eve, The Calument Reel

As our Top Underheard Albums piece mentions, Cameron McGill & What Army's last album, Is A Beast, is a stroke of genius that you somehow missed. With a new album on the way, we cannot recommend catching him at the tiny Hideout stage highly enough. McGill is an amazing live performer, and one of the best songwriters going.

Fruit Bats @ Schubas
$15 9pm
Opening: Yellowbirds

The first of two shows from the great Chicago indie outfit is also the last of two you can still get tickets for, with the Friday outing already sold out. These tickets won't last long either.
