Candied synth and boatload of gooey, summer-ready hooks is how, Chicago indie pop outfit, Stepdad roll on their fantastic debut album. The impossibly sunny breeze of twirling synth and a bopping bass line join the seared falsetto vocals of "Show Me Your Blood" for the kind of dance-ready new wave bliss that recalls New Order. Halfway through the infectious effort the effervescent swirl of skyward synth asks "Will I Ever Dance Again". A more apt question would be, 'is it possible to stop moving when this album is on?' Chiming keys and a thick bass-kissed dance beat encircle "Warrior (Jungles Part 2)" as the adorably hazy vocals wash through, while the purposive churn of synth and drums that pull together "Must Land Running" is nearly impossible to not at least sway along to. The sweet romantic sentiment driving the sugary synth frills of "Pick & Choose" and the uplifting message of life-affirming "Treasure Hugs", riding deliriously flickering keys and a tumbling beat, hold the album's lovable, positive vibe well. If danceable indie pop is your thing, Stepdad might just be your new favorite band.
