The Dirty Heads: Cabin By The Sea Review

Book-ened with tracks announcing your arrival and departure from the titular 'Cabin By The Sea', SoCal reggae outfit, The Dirty Heads attempt to take you on a sonic vacation on their sophomore album. Their blend of gooey melodic pop vocals and a boppy rap flow rolling over the carefree acoustic reggae sound adds up to a refreshing sound that pulls your mind easily to the album's beachfront setting. The Gorillaz-esque funk of "Mongo Push" gets a boost from Rome Ramirez of Sublime With Rome and the glistening blend of rubbery bass groove and chirping acoustic riffs that pull together for "Dance All Night" finds Matisyahu dropping in, but they really do not need the help. The swaying pulse of "We Will Rise" shows off the band's musical chops with a plucky dub-laced jam near the end, while the bellowing horns and head-bobbing groove rolling through "Disguise" will find you leaving the track on repeat for a while.

They manage to name drop Bob Marley in the easy-going hook of shimmying "Your Love" and sing of how great their songs are on dance-floor ready, bongo happy "Hipster" without sounding cliche. The thick horn and guitar laced hip-hop beat of weed-loving "Smoke Rings" brings in Del The Funky Homosapien, but the grumbling backing sounds out of place on the otherwise chilled effort; a point driven home by the stark contrast of the strummy campfire cool of "Burn By Myself" that follows. Lovable plea for attention "Notice" is a wonderfully breezy love song, while the strangely sweet "Best Of Us" serves as an affectionate ode to how cool his girl is. Ultimately, The Dirty Heads serves up the sun-drenched fare it sets out to with ease, making this an album sure to stay in heavy rotation on your iPod through the summer.
