Walk The Moon: Walk The Moon Review

The major label debut from, Cincinnati indie rock sensations, Walk The Moon arrives as the danceable cure for your summertime blues. They may have erupted onto the scene with, carefree call to hold tight to youth, "Anna Sun", but the album repeatedly assures that the explosive hit will not be the last you hear from them. Front man, Nicholas Petricca steers the ship vocally with a warm, wistful tenor, but the whole band frequently pulls together for swimmingly great harmonies on their melodic brand of power-pop, making the oozing hook of "Quesadilla" a dreamy listen as they beg, "I want you, I still want you", over effervescent synth and hand-clap beats. Petricca's dramatic pleas over shuttering riffs and a thick, tumbling beat on "Next In Line" makes it a romantic new wave kissed gem, while the pulsing wash of guitar and twisting neon synth driving "Jenny" make the great hook, "Jenny's got a body just like an hourglass / Taking my time, taking my time", stick long after the song has ended.

The album thrives on its blend of bubbly synth and pulsing riffs, but the alarmingly upbeat "Shiver Shiver" hints they may have a darker edge seething just beneath the pop sheen. Petricca gleefully muses, "You leave these marks up on my neck / And they're still there, I know but I still check / And the thump-thump, the thumping in my chest / As I loose the feeling in my fingertips", as they playfully sing of asphyxiation over a glistening disco-kissed guitar and tumbling beat. The party atmosphere only takes a breather with the icy synth ballad "Iscariot", ripe with the quartet's flair for wonderful harmonies as they demand, "That's what you want / But it's not what you're asking for". In the end, Walk The Moon's debut is a fantastic listen sure to serve as the soundtrack to all manner of summer debauchery thanks to the gleaming riffs and cooing harmonies of "Lisa Baby" cheerily warning, "When my baby is a mess, my baby is a dancing queen / When my baby wears a dress, it's like she's not even a human being".
