If Otis Redding, Tina Turner and Credence Clearwater Revival had a baby, it would be Alabama Shakes' stunning debut. Regardless of how you feel about southern rock, which they deliver wonderfully on fiery lead-single "Hold On", their rich infusion of soul into tracks like the sweaty, swaying "Heartbreaker" make this an impossible album to turn off. Front woman, Brittany Howard's restraint as she saunters lovingly through the title-track is as impressive as her explosive pleas on tracks like "Be Mine", as she channels classic Tina Turner in the volcanic conclusion. As ear-catching as Howard's blazing vocals are throughout, the band's ability to deftly balance soul, blues, and rock n roll on an album that feels like it could have been recorded forty years ago, you will quickly clear a spot for them on your list of favorite bands.
