In some ways the debut from Audra Mae's new band sounds like a more flushed-out, country-dipped take on Asteroids Galaxy Tour, but that somehow sells the crackling energy and swaggering confidence of it short. One listen to the twangy strummer "My Friend The Devil" or soulful flickering "The Real Thing" and you will be left wondering where Mae has been your whole life. The anxious flicker of guitar under Mae's raspy vocals promising, "You be Johnny, I'll be June", on freewheeling piano rocker "Little Red Wagon" works wonderfully to create a carefree, fun-loving vibe on the album. The band lovingly crafts a timeless country sheen through the proceedings, but it is Mae's personality-filled rasp on tracks like the ragged "Somkin The Boys" and passionate "Ne'er Do Wells" that is the star of the show.
