Electric Guest: Mondo Review

Do not make the mistake of thinking you know what to expect out of Los Angeles indie pop duo Electric Guest simply because Modest Mouse produced their debut. The touchstones of Danger Mouse's production style do float in from time to time, never more evident than in the twinkling piano bop of "This Head I Hold" and retro cool of hand-clap happy "Waves", but there is much more depth to explore. The duo have a definite old school pop charm to their sound that works well with Danger Mouse's sonic style, but the pair prove more akin to MGMT's debut on the trippy psych-pop of "Awake" and lush eight-minute dream soul of "Troubleman". The flickering synth rippling through carelessly oozing vocals on "Holes", while the cheery falsetto and marriage of dance beats, chiming piano, and strummy guitar of "Under The Gun" and steady sway of riffs and drums against blippy keys on "The Bait" make them sound like a distant cousin to Foster The People. Without a dead spot to be found, Electric Guest's sparkling debut is must-have material for any music fan.
