With their stunnig Barsuk Records debut, The Mistress, wholy produced and performed by, front man, Alex Schaaf in his bedroom, adding drummer Michael Tapper and multi-instrumentalist Jon Natchez into the mix for a studio album makes it easy to wonder if the magic is watered down with the additional ingredients. Thankfully, the tumbling thump and creaky melody of "Daughter" and vocal loops and plucky guitar of "Marathon Runner" make those worries quickly evaporate as the more guitar-focused sound of the album washes over you. Despite the jagged punk-infused riffs of "Stay At Home", Schaaf's undeniable pop sensibilities ooze through the album to give you plenty of what you fell in love with them for in the first place, while the sparse clatter of "I Want Your Love" keeps the wierd coming.
