Texas multi-instrumentalist Emily Wells' official debut is a haunting piece that deftly balances moments of quaint beauty, funky oddities, and clever pop. The swirling layers of strings floating around a thumping bass groove and rat-a-tat beat on "Dirty Sneakers And Underwear" make for a gem as quirky as it is lush and gorgeous, while the slinking jazzy tones behind the achy vocals of "Let Your Guard Down" and elegant crooning over sweeping strings on orchestral ballad "Fire Song" display Wells' charms as a singer in a sparse setting. Creaks and groans loop through drizzled guitar and strings through a thunderous bass hum on the cool "Instrumental" is further eveidence that the music a definite highlight of the album, but Wells' sweetly hushed vocals on tracks like the delightful "Darlin'" are an equally compelling reason to pick this one up.
