The Magnetic Fields: Love At The Bottom Of The Sea Review

Stephin Merritt and crew are back with another set of dark, twisted, and oddly compelling love songs. The blippy drip of adorable, chastity-loving "God Wants Us To Wait", where he bemoans, "Though it would be the perfect end to our date / I love you baby, but God wants us to wait", the electro-pop vengeance of "Your Girlfriend's Face", and tongue-in-cheek breezy folk pop of "I'd Go Anywhere With Hugh" deliver bite-sized sonic snacks that stick with you well beyond their playing time. The kitschy sway of guitar and Merritt's deep vocals sauntering through the cheery cross-dressing "Andrew In Drag" is the kind of off-kilter pop you might expect from Cake. While not all of the album's fifteen tracks have the same catchy pull as its best moments, cheeky synth-fueled moments like "Infatuation (With Your Gyration)" make it worth seeking out.
