Miniature Tigers: Mia Pharroh Review

Expectations can be a dangerous thing. After delivering one of my favorite albums of 2010's Fortress, fuelled by dangerously addictive gems like "Bullfighter Jacket" and the strangely adorable "Rock N Roll Mountain Troll", Miniature Tigers do exactly what is expected by completely shifting their sound around for something strange and unique. The jolt of electro pop infused into their brand of indie pop cool is a shock to the system on tracks like the spangled "Sex On The Regular" and the sunny drip of "Easy As All That" results in an album that takes a little getting used to for existing fans. You have to admire the band for so fearlessly recreating their sound, and the chilly strum and warm harmonies of "Boomerang" and danceable shimmer of "Female Doctor" give it a few instantly accessible tunes. Miniature Tigers might not reach the highs of their previous album here, but they remain insanely interesting thanks to their pop sensibilities and intrepid drive to keep things fresh.
