Archie Powell & The Exports: Great Ideas In Action Review

The garage punk of Chicago's Archie Powell & The Exports explodes out of the speakers with shaggy riffs, infectious hooks, and smart songwriting on their excellent sophomore album. Broken relationships are a staple of pop music, but they are rarely told as vividly and concisely as on "All The Same", as Powell tells of the couple's first meeting in 1983 before exploring the on-and-off-again love through 1998, with a great bitter hook to boot. Plea for stability, "I Need Supervision" is a jagged three chord treasure elevated by one of the best hooks on an album loaded with them. While the album's best moments are on the more fiery side, their attempt at a chilled rock ballad, "You Might Be Cruel (Or I Might Be Dumb)" is an adorable acoustic gem. A busted jukebox fuels a strummy punk-pop treasure in "Sticky Buttons", while their organ-dipped rumbler "Happy Pills" is a wonderful feel-good kiss-off. From start to finish, Archie Powell & The Exports prove ready for prime time on this fantastic album.
