Montreal trio, Parlovr strike a careful balance between freewheeling experimentation and adorable pop hooks on their sophomore album. The wind-in-your-hair surfer rock riffs and tumbling beats of "Just Marriage" is one of many that excels thanks to their carefree incorporation of splashy classic rock n roll guitar alongside jangling keys and shifty drums. It is hard not to become instantly infatuated with a band that can so gracefully pull off the wonderful power balladry of "You Only Want It 'Cause You're Lonely" one moment and the pulsing, pleading powder-keg of desperation "Holding On To Something" the next.
The dual vocalist approach of keyboardist Alex Cooper and guitarist Louis David Jackson works well throughout, with their cheery harmonies accenting tracks like loosely flung "Now That You're Gone" and downhill sprint of feel-good "Amaze-Me-Jane". The creaky guitar groaning through the classic rock n roll strut of "General Hell (True Love Fades)" and twee jangling piano bouncing into sweeping riffs on "Do You Remember" are the ear-catching oddities that will keep you coming back for more. Parlovr's latest is the indie pop gift that just keeps giving.
