JBM: Stray Ashes Review

Montreal's JBM makes a strong bid to become your new favorite singer-songwriter on his stunning sophomore album. Jesse Marchant has a voice that lives somewhere between the caterwauling cool of My Morning Jacket's Jim James and the warm hush of M. Ward. The combination of hauntingly graceful vocals and the eerie chill of the flickering folk works exceedingly well in the mellow moments like "Winter Ghosts", with just a slowly teetering guitar and a clanging tambourine, and icy jazz-infected opener "Ferry". You could get happily lost in the wondrously sauntering "Moonwatcher" and strummy acoustic "You Always Keep Around", but the more flushed-out oomph of "Forests" and slow-burn build of "Only Now" show Marchant's ability to rock out a bit, while losing none of the grand sense of melody and beauty that makes the album work so well.
