The Dig's Electric Toys might be one of the best debut albums you have never heard, so their follow-up lands on our ears with lofty expectations. The New York quartet quickly proves that our excitement over their debut was warranted. The thump and snarl of "Red Rose In The Cold Winter Ground" opens the album strong, with the band delivering a Beach Boys-esque melody in the middle before drifting along to an atmospheric haze for a bit for the vibrant, eclectic cool that make them work so well. The dual-vocalist split of David Baldwin and Emile Mosseir help keep the vocals fresh, while the band's love for blues-influenced rock n roll and strong pop sensibilities turn the pulsing organ and flickering guitars of "Black Water" into magic. Mellowed-out grooves like creaky "Animal Screams" and the syrupy jangle of "All Tied Up" space out the ragged rock of "Police Car" and loosely flung riffs fluttering through "Hole In My Heart", pushing along the gleefully melodic hook worrying about a girlfriend's fidelity. The guitar-fueled bliss here, combined with their ability to craft gooey melodic hooks, makes The Dig's sophomore album worth checking out.
