The sparse, rythmic arrangements and sultry vocals of Tu Fawning add up to a darkly sexy listen on their sophomore album. The Portland quartet make the thicket of drums invading tracks like "Anchor" come across as lush, while their willingness to mix it up with a snarling guitar and soaring choir on "Build A Great Cliff" results in a cinematic epic. The mechanical clanking beat churning under the bongo and full drum kit layers of "Bones" makes the dazzling epic one of the more menacing listens on the effort, as piano and guitar each bare their teeth as the song opens with a lengthy instrumental section before beautiful vocal harmonies breeze in to lighten things up a touch. The stop and go of a rapidly flailing beat and Mates Of State inspired breathy synth swirl among angelic vocals on "Skin And Bone", before more of the band swoops in for more dramatically looped backing vocals for an intoxicatingly dreamy listen. Tu Fawning's latest is a graceful, enveloping listen that wraps itself around you and lovingly smothers you into submission.
