Julia Stone: By The Horns Review

The female half of brother-and-sister duo Angus & Julia Stone returns with her second solo offering. There is definitely something special to the sibling duo's folky sound, but Julia makes it clear that she is plenty talented on her own here. Her sweet, raspy vocals work folk magic in the soft acoustic arrangement of "I'm Here, I'm Not Here", as her hushed vocals woo your ears. The dusty soft rock flavor of "Break Apart" works exceedingly well with her breezy vocal style, while she recalls Stevie Nicks on the gentle flicker of "Justine" with her alluringly layered vocals and the soft gallop of the beat. The drippy organ and ticking beat of the devilishly haunting title-track find her wispy vocals in the verses, quietly warning, "You spread your darkness like a disease / Then you offer your body as the only remedy", before turning deliciously sour in the vengeful hook. Electronic bits flutter alongside a softly churning beat and flickering acoustic on the awakened romance of "Bloodbuzz Ohio" for a slight change of pace. Fans of the brother-sister act may initially miss their rich harmonies, but Julia proves a compelling talent on her own on this mellow, cool album.
