Reptar: Body Faucet Review

R.E.M. might be the most famous band to call Athens, GA home, but Reptar makes a strong case for being the most caffeinated on their relentlessly vibrant debut. The crazy-eyed sweetness of, front man, Graham Ulicny's fluffy tenor fits in beautifully with the wildly flung backing of the band on tracks like lovable "Orifice Origami", as the twinkling keys and thick bass line are gleefully assaulted by grumbling synth and hand-clap laced beats. The loosely flailing, disco-kissed riffs, propulsive dance beats, and oozing layers of synth that make up tracks like "Houseboat Babies" feels a bit like Vampire Weekend on an eighties bender. With a smoothed out guitar solo sounding as if borrowed off John Fogerty's Centerfield, "New House" is a sparkling celebration of love, while the opening "Sebastian" playfully dabbles in caribbean rhythms, delivering a feel-good shout-along hook along the way. There is nothing quite like Reptar's brand of delightfully manic indie pop, which is a good thing in our book.
