Ben Howard: Every Kingdom Review

UK folk newcomer, Ben Howard has the rare ability to hold your attention with only his raspy voice and an acoustic guitar. While the songs on his debut are accented with the occasional strings and backing singers, as on "The Wolves", it is the most raw moments that make the album work so well. Howard needs only his earnest voice and slickly picked guitar to open "Everything", holding you in rapt attention on the methodically strummed "Black Flies". The slight husk haunting the melody of lovestruck "Only Love" proves that Howard has the goods to crank things up a notch, but his calming approach even when bouncing along with the picked guitar strings of "Old Pine" is what will keep you coming back; well, that and some really well-written folk tunes.

Seek - "Only Love", "The Fear", "Old Pine"
