Longtime UK post-punk quartet, The Cult pull in Bob Rock (Metallica, The Offspring) and Chris Goss (Queens Of The Stone Age, The Duke Spirit) to handle production duties on their ninth studio album. The sneering orchestral drive of guitar through "The Wolf" and whirring riffs circling the clattered beat and soaring vocals on "Amnesia" show the band has not lost their edge. Ian Astbury's shadowy, quivering vocals sound fantastic in the slowly creeping midnight snarl of "Life Is Greater Than Death", with his weathered theatrical vocals and Billy Duffy's slithering guitar making a compelling pairing. Oily riffs punch "For The Animals" along, while the murky haze of "Wilderness Now" finds the rock ballad lit with fluttering acoustic guitar. The decidedly guitar driven album hits a high point with Astbury's furious vocals and Duffy's searing guitar slicing through "Lucifer".
