The female half of Gotye's mega-hit "Somebody That I Used To Know", New Zealand pop star, Kimbra finally lands stateside with her debut album. Kimbra's jazzy, anxious vocals give her pop tunes a unique twist, turning the sparse vocal loop and drum track "Settle Down" into a clever winner. The album is a little scattershot sonically, but her clever vocal phrasing and the sweet tone of her voice tie it all together on charming tracks like the chime-filled "Two Way Street". Kimbra fuses her jazz leaning vocals with a silky R&B vibe on "Something In The Way You Are", while the soft rock and new wave combo rumbling through "Cameo Lover" and horns blasting around "Come Into My Head" show completely different, albeit alluring, sides of her sound. Those looking for something close to her hit with Gotye will find treasure in the drippy cool of "Good Intent", while the eighties synth ballad "Old Flame" wins you over with her personality-filled vocals. Kimbra takes you on a strange journey through her debut, but by the time she finally gets to her energetic synth-pop collaboration with Foster The People's Mark Foster, "Warrior", it is hard not to be enthralled by what you have heard.
